Running your own truck is one of the most rewarding paths in the trucking industry — and one of the most complex when it comes to insurance. Whether you're leased to a carrier or operating under your own authority, understanding your coverage options is essential to protecting your livelihood. This guide covers every coverage type you need, real cost ranges for 2026, and practical tips for getting the best rate.
Your insurance needs depend heavily on how you operate. There are two main scenarios:
If you're leased to a carrier (operating under their DOT authority), the carrier provides Primary Auto Liability coverage while you're on dispatch. You're responsible for filling the gaps: Physical Damage on your truck, Bobtail/NTL for off-dispatch driving, and Cargo if the carrier doesn't provide it.
If you have your own MC number, you're responsible for all coverages. You need Primary Auto Liability at all times, plus Physical Damage, Cargo, and any other coverages required by your brokers and shippers.
Who needs it: All owner-operators with their own authority. Leased operators are covered by the carrier while on dispatch.
Primary Auto Liability covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to third parties while operating your truck. The FMCSA requires a minimum of $750,000 for general freight, but most brokers require $1,000,000. This is your most important and most expensive coverage.
Typical 2026 cost: $8,000–$18,000/year (independent authority, clean record)
Who needs it: All owner-operators who own their truck (required by lenders if financed).
Physical Damage covers your truck and trailer for collision, comprehensive perils (fire, theft, vandalism, weather), and sometimes mechanical breakdown. Coverage is written based on the stated value of your equipment.
Typical 2026 cost: $2,500–$7,000/year (depends on truck value and deductible)
Who needs it: All independent authority operators; leased operators if the carrier doesn't provide it.
Cargo insurance covers the freight you're hauling against loss, theft, or damage in transit. Most brokers require it with limits of at least $100,000. Review your policy's exclusions carefully — many standard cargo policies exclude refrigeration breakdown, improper loading, and certain high-value commodities.
Typical 2026 cost: $1,200–$3,000/year ($100K limit)
Who needs it: Leased owner-operators (to cover off-dispatch driving). Not needed for independent authority operators.
Bobtail covers your truck when driving without a trailer. NTL covers personal use of the truck. Both fill the gap when the motor carrier's policy doesn't apply. See our full guide: Bobtail vs. Non-Trucking Liability: What's the Difference?
Typical 2026 cost: $400–$900/year
Who needs it: Independent authority operators; increasingly required by shippers and brokers.
General Liability covers third-party bodily injury and property damage that occurs away from your truck — for example, if you damage a loading dock, injure someone at a shipper's facility, or are sued for an incident unrelated to vehicle operation. Many shippers now require $1,000,000 in GL as a condition of doing business.
Typical 2026 cost: $500–$1,500/year
Who needs it: Independent owner-operators who are not covered by workers' compensation.
As an independent contractor, you're typically not eligible for workers' compensation. Occupational Accident insurance fills that gap — covering medical expenses, disability income replacement, and accidental death benefits if you're injured on the job. It's not a perfect substitute for workers' comp, but it's an important protection for independent operators.
Typical 2026 cost: $1,500–$3,500/year
Who needs it: Operators who pull trailers they don't own under a trailer interchange agreement.
If you pull trailers owned by other carriers under an interchange agreement, your Physical Damage policy may not cover damage to those trailers. Trailer Interchange coverage fills that gap, covering non-owned trailers while in your possession.
Typical 2026 cost: $500–$1,200/year
| Scenario | Estimated Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| Leased operator, clean record, 3+ years experience | $3,500 – $7,000 |
| Independent authority, clean record, 3+ years experience | $12,000 – $20,000 |
| New authority, clean record | $15,000 – $28,000 |
| Independent authority, violations on record | $20,000 – $40,000+ |
These are broad ranges — your actual premium depends on your specific driving record, equipment, state, commodity, and radius of operation. The best way to know your actual cost is to get quotes from multiple carriers.
An independent agent has access to dozens of carriers and can shop the market on your behalf. A captive agent (who works for one company) can only quote that company's rates. The difference can be thousands of dollars per year.
Your Motor Vehicle Record is the biggest single factor in your rate. Every violation and accident stays on your record for 3–5 years. Drive defensively, slow down, and avoid distracted driving — not just for safety, but for your bottom line.
Small claims (under $2,000–$3,000) are often better paid out of pocket. A single claim can raise your premium by $1,000–$3,000 per year for 3 years — far more than the claim itself was worth.
Dashcams protect you against fraudulent claims and can provide evidence in your favor after an accident. Some carriers offer discounts for dashcam-equipped trucks. They're one of the best investments you can make.
Insurance rates change constantly. The carrier that was cheapest 2 years ago may not be competitive today. Get competing quotes every year — even if you're happy with your current carrier. You may be surprised at the savings available.
Owner-operator insurance is complex, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. The key is understanding what you need, working with an agent who knows the trucking market, and actively managing your risk profile over time.
